We will either shoot early morning or about 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset pending location and mountain terrain. I am pretty strict on this as these times provide the best light and will yield the most beautiful portraits as my outdoor work does focus strongly on using the beauty of the sun. Do not ask me to shoot in the middle of the day, I won't do it :)

What should you wear?
Of course, much of this will be personal preference but I can give you some advice on what photographs best. Bolder colors do photograph better than really pale colors. White is almost never the best choice, especially with a family. All you end up seeing is a sea of white and it is distracting and unattractive. Cream works much better if you are wanting a light color. Layers always look nice and add interest. Everyone wearing matching shirts is a little outdated and kind of boring in my humble opinion. Choosing a few coordinating solids and then having some patterns to tie them together is a much better choice and will add a lot of interest to the portraits. For example, for a family of 5, Dad wearing a yellow polo, Mom wearing a yellow and blue striped shirt, kid one wearing navy blue plaid, kid two wearing blue and white polka dots, kid three in a navy blue solid. I usually advise choosing one piece first and then building the others around it. Pending the size of your family, an outfit change is usually feasible during the session. For the kids in the 6 month to 3 year old range I always advise putting outfits on and doing a test run with them sitting, standing, crawling, etc. to see what these outfits do. Often we realize overalls and rompers or big collars ride up and cover up faces or blue jean skirts ride up and all we see are diapers or bloomers. A test run can save many wardrobe malfunctions come shoot time :)
